A broken system

Daily life is full of examples of claims and statements related to our identity which must be verified in order to obtain something: applying for a loan, buying a glass of wine and boarding a plane are just a few of those.

Offline, the process is relatively straightforward yet inefficient. We present a physical document like a passport for verification and if accepted, we’re granted access to the requested product or service. But this process suffers from a wide range of problems, even before one attempts to reproduce it online.

As human discretion is often needed to determine if a document is real, full automation is not yet feasible and costs spiral as more humans are required. One proposed solution, the use of outsourced verification by third parties, involves both cost and delays.

Attempts to bring the process online have created more issues with often much more serious consequences. When documents are sent remotely, it’s difficult to prove who sent them, and that the documents are genuine. As a result we rely on a small number of trusted certification authorities who enjoy monopoly status and a disproportionate degree of control and economic power.

Whether offline or online, these gatekeepers restrict our choice and freedoms. Due to factors like cost, unfair practices and lack of availability, billions of people around the world have no access to verification systems. As a result, they’re denied access to travel, bank accounts and other basic services which many of us take for granted.

The use of centralised intermediaries also raises issues of security. You need only look at the Yahoo data breaches, where the data of a combined 3 billion people were stolen, to realise the profound implications of entrusting a small number of centralised servers with our data.

The final issue with existing claim verification systems and digital identity is privacy. Our personal data is a mix of the abstract – gender, height, music preference – and the specific – passport number, fingerprint, credit card number. Because only certain documents are universally accepted, we’re often forced to share more data than strictly needed when providing proof for a claim. A bartender only requires proof of age, but sees your name and passport number too. More problems arise online, as additional information such as IP address is shared without our knowledge. Even with our consent, an unnecessarily large amount of data may be shared when using social media accounts to sign in.

The unethical selling of data, catastrophic security failures and erosion of personal privacy have led to widespread distrust in today’s centralized platforms. Yet due to a lack of technological solutions, it has been difficult to digitise and improve on existing processes, until now.

Our decentralised solution

At Internet of People, we’re addressing all these challenges with an innovative combination of secure, cryptographic communication and blockchain technology. Using decentralized identifiers (DIDs) on a public blockchain, IOP gives everyone total control over their digital identity, while its decentralised trust system and peer-to-peer communication are the keys to private, secure and efficient verification of claims.

Identifiers explained

DIDs are a form of URL which point to documents containing information such as public keys or other information which can be used to verify someone’s identity. As they contain no personal data, DIDs are pseudonymous identifiers. IOP platform users can register as many unique DIDs as they wish via the Morpheus DID registry. These DIDs can be used to create various personas that together form a more secure, flexible solution for your digital identity.

The IOP technology platform

IOP’s open source technology is a combination of many modular elements which seek to eliminate reliance on external authorities, censorship and the risk of data loss or theft.

The IOP ecosystem will be secured at the most fundamental level by the IOP blockchain. Core to its operation is a fair, efficient and eco-friendly Hydra consensus mechanism powered by our native utility token, the Hydra Token. We’ve made it easy for anyone to become an anonymous node, a device which helps confirm transactions, agree network upgrades and verify claims. Nodes earn HYD tokens in return for their participation, while nodes and regular platform users will also be able to earn HYD tokens in a variety of different ways, including the consensual sharing of personal data.

Essential components

The multi-layered framework built on top of the Hydra blockchain includes a range of user-friendly tools that can support the next generation of identity and verification applications. Our Morpheus technology allows users to manage every aspect of their privacy and selectively share their data in exchange for HYD tokens, the native cryptocurrency and utility token of the platform.

Mercury, our encrypted, peer-to-peer communication protocol uses 2-way authentication so that users and claims verifiers can be sure who they’re communicating with. Other features of the IOP technology stack include secure storage, a community governance system and a consumer app that acts as the interface with other users and services on the IOP platform.

Our data will no longer be controlled by a small number of gatekeepers who profit from their privileged position, forcing us to sacrifice privacy for access to services while putting our data at risk of censorship, interference or theft.

Using the Morpheus DID registry, users will have complete ownership and control of data. They will be able to create as many different profiles and identifiers as they wish, and choose which details to share, when and to whom. And as identifiers cannot be used to trace their owner, users will have flexibility to share information while protecting their privacy.
